Who we are

Language Village of Mahdia, Tunisia is a promising project geared to create an international cross-cultural community. We are committed to Trust and Excellence in building a haven for language and cultural immersion.

The Language Village of Mahdia was founded by law n° 27 of April 22, 2008 and inaugurated by the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research on December 14, 2017. It is the first language village not only in the Arab world but also in Africa.

The village highlights include:

  •  Intercultural communication and cross-cultural competence by providing language immersion programs in a variety of languages.
  •  International education of foreign languages
  • Not only are we interested in teaching foreign languages but also in supporting undergraduates and graduates in their academic life.
  •  We seek to establish a cross-cultural haven hosting international citizens.

Where We Are

The village is located along the coast between Mahdia and Rajiche, with the turquoise blue of the sea and white washed sand hugging its walls . With modern sunlighted classrooms and dorm rooms with a view on the sea, we create a globe village, a unique retreat hub for language and culture.

Who can study in the village

Mainstream students of foreign languages in the language departments across Tunisia become citizens of the village during summer school programs. Student villagers engage in culture-based learning situations while interacting with native language fellows from UK and USA. The village setting offers villagers a unique opportunity to study and have fun in sun and on sand.

We offer training programs in a variety of foreign language to:

  • Individuals or staff in public and private sectors,
  •  Tunisian and international individuals or companies/ institutions inside and outside Tunisia,
  •  Officers of embassies, cultural centers, world organizations, and international universities.
  •  Tunisians of the second generation living abroad.  Citizens and students in primary, secondary, and tertiary education.
  •  Tunisian as well as international graduates.

What We Do

Deploying local and international standards in teaching foreign languages, we offer:

  • Arabic language programs to speakers of other languages from all over the globe.
  • summer immersion programs to mainstream students in several foreign languages.
  •  Intensive courses in foreign languages to adult learners, professionals, and managers in various sectors.
  •  Clubs and project-based courses to kids and young learners.
  •  Culture and culture activities.
  • Scientific and academic events in sciences and the Humanities.

The village headquarters consists of :

Our Teaching Method

  • Small class sizes (10-15)
  •  Curriculum fitting learners’ needs and based on communicatice methods and coaching style
  • Villagers interaction with native language fellows.
  •  Enthusiastic instructors and experienced educators
  • Local and international standards and methods in foreign language teaching.

English Language Programs

English language programs in the village are twofold. They include summer school and language training for the public.

*The 3S summer School July 2023.

The Sun-Sand-Study Summer School (2023) will host more than 160 students of the English language from the departments of English across the country for a language and culture immersion program. Students will experience and live the language through daily opportunities for cross-cultural communication. Language fellows from the UK and the USA engage with Tunisian students of English in language and culture immersion activities on the village main land and elsewhere such as visiting museums or excursions. The summer school program not only helps student engage in academic and cultural exchange projects but also develop skills and life at large.

*English language programs for Adults

English language programs for adults are intended to develop the four language skills (reading, speaking, listening, and writing) for general purposes. Our English language courses follow the CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) by the council of Europe, which presents six proficiency levels:

C2 Mastery                                     } Proficient user

*English for kids & teens

The village offers three English programs for kids and teens.

English clubs for kids (6 – 9 years)

English for young learners (10 – 14 years)

English for young adults ( 15 – 18 years)

*Business English

We offer Business English courses to local and international students or professionals who are seeking to boost their business concepts and communication skills in the work place or world business. Trainees explore public speaking and presentations, marketing communication, technical writing including e-mails, business reports and plans. A pre-intermediate level in general English is required for registration.

*English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

If you are looking to improve you academic English skills for success in university, we offer courses in critical thinking –based reading, literary analysis and composition, and translation. The courses will be available for both matriculated (students admitted into degree program) and non-matriculated students (not admitted into a degree program with an intermediate level).

*English for sectors

Custom designed courses tailored for professionals in finance, health care, banking, management, and different sectors .

*Customized English language programs:

- Intensive tailored programs for academic and professional purposes

- University preparation programs for students enrolled in a degree program, looking for long-term or short term programs abroad.

- For students who intend to pursue a master’s or a doctorate degree in the United States or other English speaking countries.

- Customized programs for educators teaching English to young learners.

- TOEIC preparation (Test of English for International Communication)

- TOFEL preparation (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

- IELTS preparation (International English Testing System) . Intermediate level B1 is required – 20 hour session.

- Techniques of communication (public speaking, professional presentations, argumentation and persuasion in debates).

- English for research publications and conferences

- Training pre-service and in-service teachers in teaching English to young learners (TEYL)
